Tech-savvy saving: apps and tools to help you manage your money

June 28, 2025 By Nicole Heales

It’s never been easier to manage your money from your phone, with hundreds of different apps available to help you with tasks ranging from simple budgeting to building wealth. Here’s a quick round-up of some popular apps available in Australia right now.

Apps for simple budgeting

Simple budgeting apps help you sort out exactly how much money you have left after costs at the end of each month. They also analyse your spending and track your progress on saving or debt-reduction goals.

Goodbudget – available for iOS and Android – the basic plan is free.

Simplsaver – Aussie-made app, available for iOS – the first five budget items are free.

Apps for saving

The latest saving apps have many innovative tools to help you save, such as roundups and pay splitting. The award-winning app from Australian digital bank Up isa banking, budgeting and saving app in one, with a range of tools and features to help you save. (You do need to be an Up customer to use this one.)

Up – available for iOS and Google Play – free.

Don’t forget your own bank– many bank apps can help you save, budget and manage your finances – and they’re usually free.

Any advice is general in nature only and has been prepared without considering your needs, objectives or financial situation. Before acting on it, you should consider its appropriateness for you, having regard to those factors. Before making any decision about whether to acquire a financial product, you should obtain the Product Disclosure Statement.

Apps for personal finance insights

Go beyond basic budgeting with apps that let you synchronise all your Australian accounts, including credit cards, loans, superannuation and investments in one place, set budget and saving goals, and automatically track bills. The award-winning Frollo app, powered by open banking, offers a downloadable Financial Passport with a comprehensive overview of your finances for the last 12 months. Got money overseas as well? You may want to consider an app like PocketSmith Sidekick or similar.

Frollo – available for iOS, Android and Google Play -free.

PocketSmith Sidekick – available for iOS, Mac and Android – the basic plan is free.

Apps for managing debt

Debt-management apps let you collect all your accounts, including Buy Now Pay Later services, in one place. Track your bills, set saving goals, access debt-management tips and improve your credit score.

WeMoney – available for iOS and Google Play. Free basic plan.

YNAB (You Need A Budget) – available for iOS and Android.
