Sustainable habits that may also benefit your wallet

June 3, 2025 By Nicole Heales

Not sure an eco-friendly lifestyle is sustainable for your budget? Here are some tips to save on costs while simultaneously helping the planet.

Moving to sustainable living is an admirable goal, but some are reluctant to switch to more planet-friendly practices because they think it will put them out of pocket. This is understandable considering that organic foods and eco-friendly appliances and products often carry a higher price tag.

However, there are many ways that sustainable living may help reduce your expenses.

Here are some smart lifestyle adjustments that are easy on the environment and budget:

• Embrace second-hand shopping

Head to your local thrift stores or online marketplaces for clothing, furniture and gadgets. This not only saves you money but may also contribute to reducing landfill.

• Reduce energy consumption at home

Switching to LED bulbs, unplugging devices when not in use, and investing in smart power strips may help lower your household energy usage and, therefore, electricity bills.

• Meal prep with minimal waste

Plan meals, buy in bulk and store food properly to reduce your food waste. This can help you save on groceries and avoid last-minute takeout expenses.

• Use reusable products

Invest in reusable water bottles, coffee cups, shopping bags and containers. This eliminates the need for single use items and the cost of constant replacements.

• Opt for public transport or carpooling

You can reduce fuel costs, car maintenance expenses and your carbon footprint by using public transport, cycling or sharing rides with others.

• DIY household cleaners

With a few basic ingredients like vinegar, baking soda and lemon juice, you can easily make your own eco-friendly cleaning products that are cheap, non-toxic and effective.

• Grow your own food

If you have a garden space, starting a small veggie garden or growing herbs in pots can reduce your grocery costs, lower your carbon footprint, and provide you with fresh, organic produce.

• Conserve water

Installing low-flow showerheads and using water-efficient appliances may reduce your utility bills as well as saving water.

Choosing sustainable habits can help create a healthier, more secure tomorrow for generations to come. Another way you can safeguard your future is through financial protection like life insurance. I can help tailor a policy that is right for you, so that your present and your family’s future are protected.
